How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated on the edge of transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to connect with the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware of when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails the ECU will display the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync and possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper chain of timing. However, the error code won't be displayed on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are different pins on the connector, and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms if the sensor is in full operation. 2. Injectors

Yesterday, as i was accelerating off the highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or, my injectors were not firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. I placed a tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 spare audi key cost and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start when the G28 is unplugged and it runs perfectly when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temperature value of -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. It is easy to test them - simply put your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump at the connector end facing up). They must be infinite ohms.
