How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is located at the top of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to regulate boost and fuel. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can activate spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display an error code P00160 which indicates that the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. The code won't appear without the additional information supplied by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It can be a bit difficult to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. Look for signs of coolant, or oil in the connector bay if you are experiencing issues with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. This morning i pull out the spark plugs. Three were soaked with gazoline and the fourth one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is in another place.

I also tried lost audi keys to reset the PID without success. The car will start if the G28 is not plugged in and runs fine when it is connected but it still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant temperature sensor (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm concerned that i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please chime in! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sensor is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store.
